netLibrary eBook
Selected for
a Virtual Library
|
|
- eBooks are electronic versions of printed books that can be viewed from
any computer connected to the Internet.
- eBooks can be browsed for quick research and reference or checked out to
be read.
- eBooks are automatically returned at the end of your checkout period.
Through the TexShare initiative, Abell Library has approximately 19,000
netLibrary eBook titles available for use by students, staff and faculty.
In order to check netLibrary
eBooks out you must have a netLibrary account. You can set your account
up ahead of time, or you will be prompted to do so once you try to check
out a book. To create an account ahead of time:
1. Go to /Abell/Elinfor/paidfor.htm#n and
click on the link to netLibrary. (If you are off-campus, you will be brought
to the authentication process used for all subscription resources.)
2. Once at netLibrary, Click on the "Create A Free Account" link on
the upper, right hand corner of the screen, as shown below.

3. You will set up an account name and password by entering information into
the
"Create A Free Account" form, as shown below. Required fields are bold
red.

4. Select the submit button, and your account is ready!
The records of all eBooks
have been placed within the Abell Library's catalog, so you can search for
eBooks the same way that you search for paper books. You can also search
within netLibrary to find eBooks. However, be aware that you may find books
that Austin College does not have access to. See below for a sample search
screen.

First, you must log in
with the free account you created earlier. By checking out an eBook, you
have exclusive use for 24 hours. After that, the ebook is automatically
returned. There is no worry about overdue fines!
Once you have selected the book you want to check out (by clicking on "View
Details"), simply click on the "Check out for 24 hours," as shown
below.

You may
browse an eBook without using an account.
Browsing an eBook is the equivalent of taking a book off the shelf and looking
through it. While you are actively using it, no one else can. If 15 minutes elapses
without active use, the eBook is "put back on the shelf".
To browse, simply select the Browse this eBook Online link, once you have selected
the title you want. The eBook will be displayed.

Once selected, your ebook
can be searched. Click on the "Search" tab on the toolbar on the
left side of the screen.
For instance, to know if Abraham Lincoln is mentioned in the book, type
"Abraham Lincoln" and click on the "Search" key.

Once the search finishes, the number of results found and the number of pages
those results were found on are displayed.
Once you have logged into your account and opened an ebook, you can annotate
any page of the ebook and save your notes for reference.
1. Select the specific page you want to annotate. By default, the current page
number will be the note name.
4. Add text to the note field. You will be limited to a total of 500 characters.
5. Click on the "Add Note" button when finished, and your notes will
be saved to your netLibrary account. You are limited to one note per page.
Yes and
no. Copyright rules are the same for eBooks as they are for print books.
You can print single pages of an eBook, much like you can print a single
page of a print book on a photocopier, but not the entire book.
