Statistical Abstract of the United States

Reference Item of the Month: Statistical Abstract of the United States

Statistical Abstract of the United States is a well-known reference source published by the United States government since 1878.  Sources of the statistics include the U.S. Census Bureau, Bureau of Labor Statistics, Bureau of Economic Analysis, and other sources both federal and private.  It is the authoritative and comprehensive source of statistics on the social, political, and economic condition of the United States.

Since 1938, the data has been compiled and published by the Bureau of the Census and, with the name change in 1998, by the U.S. Census Bureau.  In fall 2011, the U.S. Census Bureau decided to eliminate the compilation and publication of this title in order to reassign the funds to other priorities. Therefore, the 131st edition published in 2012 is the last edition to be published by the government and freely available.  Starting with the 2013 edition, ProQuest, a for – profit publisher, will publish this title as an online only title, updated monthly.

The 131st (2012) print edition is included in ProQuest Statistical Insight.  The new 2013 online edition is a separate database located here

ProQuest provides a library guide to assist users in how to use this statistical database effectively.  The Libguide has tabs across the top that lead to a page giving you information on browsing, searching, viewing tables, updated tables, and emailing, printing and saving.  It also has brief tutorials.  Address:
