Reference Item of the Month:
Abell Library Website
With the beginning of school, with the new college web site, our reference item of the month is Abell Library Center’s website home page --http://abell.austincollege.edu/Abell/. It is divided into zones of information. First, there is the ribbon menu with links to the college website, to our special collections/archive web site, to online bibliographies of the artistic and authored works of AC’s faculty, to a ‘how-do-I-do this’ (for instance, to citing sources and also to connecting to our subscription sources from off-campus), and finally, a link to information about Abell Library like our hours, staff, maps and policies.
Below that menu are two columns. On the left column, are the headings, FIND and SERVICES, while the column on the right has headings, TOOLS and CAMPUS. In between those columns, are links to special hours during the current semester, to our ‘Ask a Librarian’ service, to the Reference Item of the Month (and its archive of past items) and to a search field for Journal Finder, one of the best ways to find out which magazine, periodical, or journal we have available to the campus, whether online or in print.
Under FIND, are links to our catalog, to other libraries’ catalogs, to what is in the library on reserve for a class; then, under SERVICES, we have a link to a variety of forms one can use to request books and articles through our interlibrary loan service, as well as a place for the ‘Ask a Librarian’ form. Under TOOLS on the column on the right, are links to our Subject Guides (a list of resources purchased and organized especially to highlight materials useful to a specific discipline), the A to Z E-Sources list, an alphabetical list by title of online resources, and our link to style manuals, which are useful to prevent citing another’s work improperly. Finally, under the CAMPUS heading, we included links to IT Services, Moodle and Webhopper.
