You will need: your social security number, W-2’s from all employers, any 1099’s (interest and dividends) from financial institutions and insurance companies, and, if you want to have your refund automatically deposited to your financial account, your checking or savings account routing and account numbers.

If you like the software company you chose, they will usually offer to save your information for you for one year. Or you may want to try another software company offering free file. Next year, the software company you use this year, will offer to repopulate your information, allowing you to edit and make necessary changes. These offers usually cost around $10-$15. Deluxe editions at a higher price will allow you to save your IRS returns for more than one year.
