The purpose of Data.gov is to increase public access to high value, machine readable datasets generated by the Executive Branch of the Federal Government. A priority Open Government Initiative, Data.gov increases the public's ability to easily find, download, and use datasets that are generated and held by the Federal Government. Descriptions of the Federal datasets are provided as well as information about how to access the datasets. A primary goal of Data.gov is to improve access to Federal data and expand creative use of those data beyond the walls of government by encouraging innovative ideas (e.g., web applications). Data.gov strives to make government more transparent and is committed to creating an unprecedented level of openness in Government.

The Societal Impacts Program (SIP) maintains this site of statistics on extreme weather events for the benefit of researchers, policy makers, the media, and the general public. You will find monetary damage data on hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, as well as composite data adjusted for inflation and wealth. You will also find data on lightning fatalities, and similar other data. The composite sourcebook was last updated July 2009, and includes data updated to 2007.

It is now even easier to get a background check on an investment professional, file a complaint, or check out the latest news and bulletins. Be sure to check out the "Resources" page for free educational books and brochures available for download. Look for new additions in the future, such as investor education presentations and an extensive savings and investing course.
