The purpose of Data.gov is to increase public access to high value, machine readable datasets generated by the Executive Branch of the Federal Government. A priority Open Government Initiative, Data.gov increases the public's ability to easily find, download, and use datasets that are generated and held by the Federal Government. Descriptions of the Federal datasets are provided as well as information about how to access the datasets. A primary goal of Data.gov is to improve access to Federal data and expand creative use of those data beyond the walls of government by encouraging innovative ideas (e.g., web applications). Data.gov strives to make government more transparent and is committed to creating an unprecedented level of openness in Government.

The Societal Impacts Program (SIP) maintains this site of statistics on extreme weather events for the benefit of researchers, policy makers, the media, and the general public. You will find monetary damage data on hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, as well as composite data adjusted for inflation and wealth. You will also find data on lightning fatalities, and similar other data. The composite sourcebook was last updated July 2009, and includes data updated to 2007.

EDGAR, the Electronic Data Gathering, Analysis, and Retrieval system, performs automated collection, validation, indexing, acceptance, and forwarding of submissions by companies and others who are required by law to file forms with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). Full-text searching is available for reports filed the last four years.  http://www.sec.gov/edgar.shtml is the Filings & Forms Page of EDGAR.   Click on http://www.sec.gov/about/forms/secforms.htm SEC Forms List (PDF Versions):  Page down the list to be sure the form you need is included. To enter the Next-Generation EDGAR system, from  http://www.sec.gov/ SEC Home page, click on Search EDGAR for Company Filings on the right. Search by Company name, CIK or Ticker Symbol, file number, state, country, and/or SIC.

Reports filed from 1994 through reports filed yesterday are available in Historical EDGAR Archives, http://www.sec.gov/cgi-bin/srch-edgar where searching is available by header information only.  The appearance of the searching may be unfamiliar to you, but it is actually an older form of searching where you identified the kind of information or placement of the information you were searching for, then the specific search string you formulated.  Click on header information http://www.sec.gov/edgar/searchedgar/edgarzones.htm to see the command line strings to use. The Texas State Securities Board hosts this newly updated and revised Investor Education website, www.TexasInvestorEd.org, which is now easier to navigate with up-to-date investor information and resources, financial calculators, games, and more. Investor resources for every stage of life are offered: youth, seniors, military, teachers, and families.  It is now even easier to get a background check on an investment professional, file a complaint, or check out the latest news and bulletins.  Be sure to check out the "Resources" page for free educational books and brochures available for download. Look for new additions in the future, such as investor education presentations and an extensive savings and investing course. In addition, there is a link to their Facebook page to "Like" this organization, to receive updates on investor education sources and materials, as well as news on cases involving investment scams and securities fraud.
